I watched Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein tonight, with Benedict Cumberbatch as The Creature, and it was undoubtedly one of the best productions I’ve ever seen.
I had incredibly high expectations going in to watch the piece, but it still managed to exceed them.
Everything about it was so gorgeous and immaculately done. The set design (with the revolving floor and beautiful assortment of lights on the ceiling signifying the stars in the night sky), the directing, the lighting, the music and of course, the acting.
I really enjoyed the girl who played Elizabeth - both the character and the actress were very impressive. Jonny Lee Miller did an outstanding job as Victor Frankenstein, and I’m excited to see him play The Creature, when I go to watch “the reverse” showing next week.
And then there’s Benedict Cumberbatch. Oh Benny, how you never cease to amaze me. His portrayal of The Creature was absolutely flawless from beginning to end. I went through every single emotion while watching that man play such an inconceivably challenging role.
When finally it was The Creature who was offering to teach his Creator about love, I broke down. By the end of the show, I was in tears.
I am so very excited to see the show again next week, with the actors in their switched roles. If anyone is considering watching it but still not entirely sure, I highly suggest that you do, if there are still tickets to any showtimes near you.
I leave you with one of my favourite quotes from the production:
“I did not choose to be born, but once born, I will fight to live. All life is precious, even mine.”
